GHOLSTON
To God be the glory.
ME
Vernon Gholston was born June 5, 1986 in Detroit Michigan. He’s the oldest of 2 sons to mother, Cheryl Gholston and father, Vernon Nelson. Watching his grandfather growing up, he learned the values of hard work. At the age of 13 he lost his father to Multiple sclerosis. Then being raised by a single mother, he took on the role of being man of the house and wanting to grow into a role model.
Growing Up
FOOTBALL
The Early Years
Vernon joined the Cass Technical High School Football Team in 2005; knowing little to nothing about football. Relying on his physical strength, he spent his first season at offensive guard. He then committed himself and spent time learning the game. As a senior, Vernon emerged as one of the top prospects in the Midwest after registering 75 tackles, including six sacks as a linebacker. He also earned an All-State selection as an offensive guard. He received numerous scholarships offers and was sought after by some of college football’s elites.
FAITH
"Nothing about me is self-made. I owe God everything."
Vernon was brought up in a Christian church. Every Sunday, his mother would take him and his brother to New Shiloh Baptized Church. It became their family’s church. At the age of 11 Vernon was baptized and became a child of God. From then, he and brother would do regular after-school bible studies. He learned so much about God and drew closer to him. Over the years, like most young people, the world’s influence lead Vernon away from the church; more specifically God. At times, you couldn’t even tell Vernon knew God.
